James-Amzin is a contemporary, tap, and improvisational dance artist from Vancouver Island, BC, grateful to be born and based on stolen native land. James-Amzin’s aim in dance is to materialize and elucidate the internal landscape and its preposterousness. He views dance as one of the last socially acceptable bastions of modern magical practice. James-Amzin grew up performing in community theatre and dance competitions before training more seriously in dance. He has been teaching contemporary and tap dance since 2018.
James-Amzin is a graduate of Modus Operandi Contemporary Dance Training Program, under the direction of David Raymond, Tiffany Tregarthen, and Kate Franklin. James-Amzin has been a guest tap dancer with Baby Face Brass, toured with Jenn Edwards’ & Jennifer Aoki’s ‘The Body Orchestra’, danced In the Pina Bausch Nelken Line project organized by Paras Terezakis’ Kinesis Dance Somatheatro, and danced with Company 605 in ‘Looping’, a three hour, in the round, improvised contemporary dance installation. He also premiered a 32 minute dance-theatre solo choreographed by Jennifer Mcleish-Lewis at VIDF 2024. Most recently, James-Amzin has worked with Blackout Theatre in their play “City of Tales,” as the role of Monkey. James-Amzin was a 2024 scholarship recipient with EDAM to study contact improvisation under the direction of Peter Bingham and is a part of their Fall Choreographic Series 2025.
