From Bowen Island, BC, Sophia Makarenko started taking local ballet classes at the age of three. Her training led her to Arts Umbrella where she graduated from the Post Secondary Dance Diploma Program under the direction of Artemis Gordon. In the 2022/23 season, she was a part of Ballet BC's Annex, under the direction of Medhi Walerski.

Sophia is currently working as a dance artist, teacher, choreographer and actor throughout Canada. She has had the pleasure of working with artists such as Crystal Pite, Alexis Fletcher, Sylvain Senez, Fernando Hernando Magadan, Isak Enquist, Amir Hosseini, Kay Huang Barnes among others. She has also performed with companies such as Ballet BC, Belle Spirale Dance Projects, Blackout Art Society and Crossmanuever.

In addition to her work as a dancer and performer, she is passionate about the collaboration between dance and film. Sophia is resident choreographer and dancer with the Canadian Record Label, Petrichor North Records and has worked on short films across Canada as well as in Iceland.

Sophia is a co-founder of dance-theatre collective, Paper Rabbits, with Nathan Coburn and Elle Derkitt.
